How to Spec a Movable Partition Wall Without Painting Yourself Into a Corner

Most bad partition projects start with a vague request: “We need a movable wall, something soundproof, nice finish.” That sentence is not a brief. Factories can quote it, sure—but the number you get will be soft, and the site arguments later will be hard.

Below is the briefing order we ask contractors and owners to follow. It is not theory. It is the order that keeps drawings, production, and installation from fighting each other.

First: say what the room must do

Are two events running at the same time with clients who expect privacy? Or do you mainly want daylight and a soft visual split? How many times a day will staff open and close the wall? Do waiters or AV techs need a pass door when panels stay closed?

If you cannot answer those, stop picking colors. Solid acoustic panels, glass folding systems, and hybrid layouts solve different jobs. Mixing them up is how showrooms end up with pretty glass that cannot hold a confidential meeting.

Then: pick series against real room scale

A practical map many commercial jobs still follow:

• 65 mm — small meeting and training rooms; lighter handling; height often up to about 4.2 m
• 85 mm — restaurant private rooms and mid banquet; often the value choice; built-in door available; height commonly up to about 8 m
• 100 mm — hotel multi-function halls chasing higher insulation (toward ~60 dB in the right build); taller spans; custom shapes when architecture demands it

One warning: “soundproof” without a number is marketing. Put a dB or STC target in the RFQ. We can discuss lab data versus on-site reality, but we need a target first.

Track, pocket, floor—boring, decisive

Ceiling track, no floor groove is the default for accessibility and cleaning. Still check four things that kill schedules: top structure load, stacking pocket size and park direction, floor flatness where bottom seals land, and any fire or material rules in the project book. Aluminum frames (we commonly use 6063-T6) only stay quiet and straight if the track line was set properly.

Operation: buy frequency, not ego

Manual for ordinary weekly changeovers. Semi-auto locking when the opening is long and banquet turns are tight. Full-auto when the property sells “instant reconfiguration” as part of the guest experience. Over-automating a wall that moves twice a month is a classic budget leak.

Finish early, or wait for delay

Veneer, fire-rated melamine, fabric, leather, art panels, frame colors—these affect both look and lead time. Align with FF&E before production starts. Changing finish after panels are in queue is how “urgent” projects quietly slip two weeks.

What to send if you want a usable quote

Opening width and clear height (or a floor plan). Acoustic target. Finish direction and fire notes. Manual / semi-auto / full-auto preference. Destination country and rough install window. That package is enough for Kocen to recommend a series instead of guessing.
